Garden centers and plant nurseries sell annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, vegetables and houseplants, along with soil, mulch, fertilizer, pots and tools. Independent nurseries often grow part of their own stock and carry varieties that do well in the local climate, while big-box garden departments compete on price for common plants. Wholesale nurseries and growers sell to landscapers and sometimes to the public at volume prices; tree nurseries sell balled-and-burlapped and container trees and can deliver and plant large specimens. Specialty growers focus on bonsai, cactus and succulents, orchids or native plants, and hydroponics stores sell lights, nutrients and systems for growing indoors.

Albany is in New York, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and Albany follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Huge selection, great quality and helpful/knowledgeable staff. Pricier than the big box stores but worth it.

I went to Hewitts to get a 9’ Christmas tree today (I really wanted as close to 9’ to fill the room and not require additional cutting). My first frustration was that they couldn’t tell me how big the trees were, just a rough range. The kid helping me was friendly and showed me three or four trees, but without knowing how tall they were, I was reluctant. While the kid was helping me, I heard a manager near by talking to another customer (I think the managers name was Gary, but I’m not positive) he was being super loud and rude to an old lady. So much so that I was embarrassed for him, how is it ever ok to yell at a customer like that? Shame on you Gary! I probably would have overlooked that if I knew any tree I liked was 9’, but after their terrible measuring system and hearing a manger yell at an elderly customer like that I decided to take my business elsewhere. I probably won’t bother to go back for other things in the future.

I don't know what has happened to Hewitt's. Western Ave. Guilderland. I have spent $100's every year there for the past 30 years. For the first time, EVER I returned with an issue about an (perennial) Oleander (one of two that I purchased.) One was thriving the other clearly wasn't. They were treated identically and in virtually the same spot a few feet apart. The manager was rude and disinterested claiming I must've over watered, then underwater even though I kept saying that I treated them identically. He offered no refund or partial refund, or no opportunity for me to exchange it in the spring when they would get more in. Well now I have been going a few minutes further up Western to GADE FARMS. What a fabulous garden center. I had no idea. Amy, the manager, and her staff are super knowledgeable, helpful and friendly and genuinely seem to love the work. On the other hand the Guilderland Hewitt's staff I have interacted with the last year or so have been disagreeable, put out, and just plain sour. Sad to see this happen after being so loyal for so long.

UPDATE: great customer service response through an email exchange. Picked up this Raven ZZ plant yesterday. I had never seen a plant this πŸ–€ and loved it. Staff did come up to us as we were walking. Also showed me to their pumice. Some of the house plants seemed very over watered. Bamboo was super cute. Think there was a rubber plant variation. Mentioned the only two of these plants looked a little rough possible rot as the one of the staff told me not to over water the very over watered plant. Told me it was just transitioning/coming out of winter. Got home and checked one of the little potatoes type roots was completely rotted. Hoping to save it. Disappointing for a $30 plant πŸ˜• UPDATED Will call and give update based on customer service.

I've always had good luck with the plants I've bought here. Maybe it's too early in the season, but something seems off this year. The selection seems very small.
